The Gunners can go five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a win on Tuesday

Arsenal make the short trip to take on Luton tonight in what is the first Premier League meeting between the two sides.

It has been 32 years since the teams last met, with The Hatters running out 1-0 winners in the old First Division.

Arsenal were serious title contenders then and are serious title contenders again now as they look to move five points clear at the top, at least for now, with a victory.

Premier League pace-setter Arsenal will make the short trip north to Kenilworth Road on Tuesday to take on Luton with the opportunity of going five points clear at the top of the table. And it will be almost exactly 32 years since the teams last faced off on Christmas Day 1991, having been kept apart since the Hatters suffered relegation that season despite beating the Gunners 1-0 at home. Much has changed for both outfits since then, with Mikel Arteta’s men currently riding on a high and hoping to expose Manchester City’s recent slip-up to open up some breathing space at the summit.

City was seconds from beating Tottenham at home on Sunday, only for Dejan Kulusevski’s 95th-minute equalizer to set back the defending champion and leave it three points adrift of Arsenal.

Earlier on the weekend, the north Londoners sewed up a sixth straight home win against Wolves, scoring twice in the first 13 minutes to clinch a narrow result.

Things haven’t been nearly as resilient on the road, however, considering Arsenal has won just two of its last six away fixtures and lost in three of those.

And promoted Luton did just so happen to bag all three points in its last home game—albeit a first triumph at Kenilworth Road in the league this term.

For his part, Luton boss Rob Edwards is under no illusions regarding the task his side face in midweek:

The scale of that challenge is magnified by a glut of recent injury troubles, which saw both central defenders Tom Lockyer and Teden Mengi injured in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

And with Reece Burke and Mads Andersen already on the treatment table, that could lead to a bit of experimentation in front of goal for Tuesday’s host.

On-loan midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga is also not permitted to face parent club Arsenal, though the Belgian is injured in any case and wouldn’t have been available.
